Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilizations

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is type of treatment that utilizes a stainless steel tool to locate and treat individuals diagnosed with soft tissue dysfunction. This can be used in a variety of ways to treat soft tissues that may be experiencing fascial restrictions (lack of motion), fibrosis (scaring), chronic inflammation or dysfunctional neuromuscular activity. The instrument allows the doctor to locate the areas in need of treatment (due to the vibration the steel tool transmits from injured tissues in the body) and then effectively break down the fascial restrictions through specific movements. This creates a “micro trauma” in the area that is being worked on, thus creating a local inflammatory response and reinitiates the first stage healing response within the body. This helps promote the body’s ability to heal itself by increasing circulation to the area and thus repairing the injured tissues. IASTM also improves neuromuscular activity, helping improve healing and function. Many times this treatment will be performed as the patient is going through specific exercises or ranges of motion.

Common types of injuries that IASTM is great at treating:
• Tennis Elbow/Golfers Elbow
• Plantar Fascitis
• Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
• Patellar Tendinitis
• IT Band Syndrome
• Myofascial pain and restrictions
• Post-surgical scars
• Ankle sprains
• Neck pain
• Low back pain
• Shin Splints
